Have you wondered why it’s challenging to communicate with some people you manage, or why your boss wants things done now, or you’re having a hard time connecting with a customer?
There is a simple tool designed to help you understand yourself and other people in your workplace. Everything DiSC® helps you build more effective working relationships based on an understanding of different behavioral styles.
The foundation of DiSC® was first described by William Moulton Marston in his 1928 book, Emotions of Normal People. Marston identified what he called four “primary emotions” and associated behavioral responses, which today we know as Dominance (D), Influence (i), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C).
Since Marston’s time, many instruments have been developed to measure these attributes. The Everything DiSC® assessment uses the circle, or circumplex, as illustrated below, as an intuitive way to represent this model. Although all points around the circle are equally meaningful and interpretable, the DiSC model discusses four specific reference points.
- Dominance: direct, strong-willed, and forceful
- Influence: sociable, talkative, and lively
- Steadiness: gentle, accommodating, and soft-hearted
- Conscientiousness: private, analytical, and logical
Eight workplace priorities are arranged in a circular shape, with the priorities arranged in the manner predicted by the Everything DiSC Workplace® model. That is, the sequence around the circle proceeds: Action, Enthusiasm, Collaboration, Support, Stability, Accuracy, Challenge, and Results. This tool is built to be simple to understand but is not simplistic. It’s easy to determine your style just by answering two simple questions.
|Option One||Option Two|
Now combine the two answers – If you are fast-paced & outspoken and questioning & skeptical you would be a D or have more Dominant behaviors. If you tend to be more cautious & reflective and warm & accepting you would be an S or have more Steadiness behaviors. The DiSC model below shows the priorities for each D, i, S, or C point. For example, the priorities that are important to a D include Challenge, Results, and Action, sometimes Enthusiasm and/or Accuracy may be included.
By digging deeper into understanding your priorities and tendencies, you’ll be able to understand people who are not like you, or too much like you which will improve communication in and out of the workplace.
