Do you have the potential to become a Victim of Hurricane Matthew’s devastation?


Hurricane Matthew hit the East coast of the US in October. As of last month, the total was estimated over $10 Billion in destruction. But how much of your loss will be added to that?

Like many of us who don’t live near the East coast, we just watched in horror as the wind, water and devastation hit our country and neighboring land. Mother Nature has a mind of her own. But this storm could reach beyond the land, it has the potential to hit your wallet, and not in a good way.

Many very worthy and reputable organizations are available to help hurricane victims through the recovery, repair and renewing of their spirit. However, there are most likely many devious scams that are going to prey on the weak and vulnerable.

Here are some tips to avoid being a victim of devastation from the scams that come out of these situations.

  • Do not blindly donate over the phone. If you wish to donate to an organization, contact their direct 800 number.
  • Do not click on links in an email. If you want to contribute to the supporting the rebuild, directly type in the website. Once on the website, verify it is the official website of the organization you intended to contribute through.
  • Use a credit card to donate. You are more likely to have success in recapturing any costs that were not legitimate with your credit card company’s assistance, as opposed to donating with your debit card or directly from your bank account.
  • Get a receipt. It doesn’t have to be a paper receipt, but a receipt with the company’s legal name, address and tax ID #. You will need that when doing your taxes.

Much help is needed in these times. Supporting those that most often have supported others in time of need. Be sure to specify what your donation is should go to support. Most organizations allow those requests and do direct the funds accordingly.
