Travel and Medical Insurance – When your Health Plan is Enough and when to Purchase Additional Coverage

When traveling, there are basically two types of travel when it comes to medical insurance; Domestic and International.

Domestic Travel: Domestic travel is when you leave your home in the United States, however remain within the continental 48 states, Alaska and Hawaii. Very often, even care needed in the Bahamas and Puerto Rico could be processed as if domestic. During domestic travel, coverage offered through an employer or purchased individually will typically cover urgent and emergency care needed. Urgent is explained as ‘what a prudent person would deem urgent’ and emergency is explained as ‘life or limb threatening’. What classically is NOT covered outside your home network, is ‘routine’ care. This would be care such as medication review appointments. These are appointments routinely set with a ‘local’ family doctor or specialist. It is not a regular occurrence to have this type of visit while traveling.

International Travel: This is travel outside of the continental United States. During this type of travel, a plan may have limited coverage, if any care, so before going overseas a quick policy glance or call to your agent is worthwhile. If a policy shows li mited or no coverage available internationally, purchase a short term medical travel insurance policy.

This policy is purchased for the period of time from leaving the United States to the day of return. There are no deductible options with a minimum of covered expenses of $60,000 or a high deductible of $2,500 and covered expenses of up to $1 million. There are important additional reasons to purchase coverage when traveling abroad.

Travel medical coverage for the time outside the country can cover things like political evacuation and repatriation of remains. This plan would cover the return of mortal remains to the United States. You can review policy designs at

A little more about us:
The Business Warrior group has some of the industry’s top experts in all the areas your business needs to be successful. Amongst the contributors is Janis VanAhn, owner of Health Insurance Advisor, LLC. For 19 years Janis has worked in and around the health insurance industry initially providing service to agents and employers related to employee benefits, individual healthcare and Medicare, while more recently becoming appointed as an individual agent with various quality carriers to provide this service to individuals through her own business.

Four years ago Janis was ‘blessed’ with being let go from her job at an insurance ageny. Staying within insurance was her path…but in what capacity. 2010 was the year Janis began her career as an independent insurance agent specializing in health insurance. Finding quality, cost-effective healthcare for individuals and families under age 65 as well as working with those who are Medicare eligible truly was her passion. She has made this a true specialty and positioned herself as someone to work with whether it is a financial professional or property & casualty agent with a client that needs assistance, to a group of seniors turning 65 and they keep receiving Medicare information and are confused about what to do.

Janis enjoys the one on one contact with clients as well as looking forward to speaking to groups about healthcare. Her excitement for this industry is what drives her to stay in tune with Healthcare Reform and what is currently happening and what will happen with coverage from now to past 2014.

‘Educating individual and Medicare consumers to make informed choices’ is her mission because if people are educated and understand, they will make informed choices that they are comfortable with.
