On the Move

Share

My husband Brad and I are moving to a new home this summer. We put our house on the market earlier this year and within a few weeks it was sold.

After many conversations we determined the move made sense. Brad is now coaching at Simpson College in Indianola and the daily commute for him, from Urbandale, has become burdensome……so, we weighed our options and made a decision…..Norwalk, Iowa is soon where we will call home.

Though we are both good with the move, it forces us to face the reality of how different things are going to be. We met in Urbandale in 1988 and have lived here for over 30 years….lots of memories… …it’s in this house that we raised our two boys.  It’s where we celebrated birthdays. It’s the backyard the boys played baseball in, the drive way they played hoops in…it’s the house where I hid Easter eggs…

But as it should be…. the boys are now grown ….and it’s just the two of us… we don’t need the space we have today. It’s time to make new memories.

So we are in the middle of sorting through all of our things…and we are packing, reminiscing, tossing, donating … And… being confronted with the fact that we have accumulated a lot of ‘stuff’.  A LOT of stuff.   I am finding myself overwhelmed; feeling the urgency to declutter, to simplify, to get organized.  I wonder….how did we let it get so out of control?

As I have been reflecting on this I have realized this can happen with our finances too. Without realizing it we can stop paying attention…..we allow our finances to go into auto pilot mode and before we know it, debt accumulates….we’ve lost control of our spending…we begin to feel overwhelmed and unorganized.

The spring and summer months give us all the desire to start fresh. Spring cleaning in particular, is a longstanding tradition. Why not adapt this to your finances as well? I encourage you to make time this spring and summer to get organized…to take back the controls and declutter your financial household.
