Silver Sneakers is a program that many of the Medicare Advantage plans offer. This additional benefit to the medical and prescription drug coverage offer a basic membership at many locations throughout the US as well as offering FLEX classes within the community or specific cardio, strength and range of motion or circuit training for all levels of ability. It’s an opportunity to workout and meet others that are working toward better health.
An additional benefit I found is tuition assistance. Intriguing right? It’s a great concept. Anyone eligible for Silver Sneakers can enroll in the CollegeSave Plan. A member can set up an account for anyone from infancy to junior year in high school. The beneficiary of the funds can be a family member (grandchild, niece, nephew, etc…) friend, Godchild, basically any child younger than junior year in high school.
This is a participatory benefit. Upon enrollment to CollegeSave, the Silver Sneakers member receives $1000 to their account. Then, a member must visit their designated work out facility, flex class, etc… at least 7 times a month to receive an additional $250 a month to their account. Members can save up to one full year’s worth of tuition costs for each student enrolled. The savings are applied in four equal installments over the four years of enrollment at participating schools.
Nearly 400 private colleges and universities in 44 states participate. 80% are on the U.S. News & World Report List of America’s Best Colleges and Universities. The colleges cover 100% of the cost of the tuition discounts making it possible for your members to enjoy this valuable benefit with no cost to the health plan. $80.1 million in tuition discounts were redeemed in 2017. Over 4 million eligible families have been served by the program.
Visit collegesave.org/silversneakers for the complete list. What a great benefit! If you are interested in discussing how to participate, give us a call at Health Insurance Advisor, LLC.

A little more about us:
The Business Warrior group has some of the industry’s top experts in all the areas your business needs to be successful. Amongst the contributors is Janis VanAhn, owner of Health Insurance Advisor, LLC. For 19 years Janis has worked in and around the health insurance industry initially providing service to agents and employers related to employee benefits, individual healthcare and Medicare, while more recently becoming appointed as an individual agent with various quality carriers to provide this service to individuals through her own business.
Four years ago Janis was ‘blessed’ with being let go from her job at an insurance ageny. Staying within insurance was her path…but in what capacity. 2010 was the year Janis began her career as an independent insurance agent specializing in health insurance. Finding quality, cost-effective healthcare for individuals and families under age 65 as well as working with those who are Medicare eligible truly was her passion. She has made this a true specialty and positioned herself as someone to work with whether it is a financial professional or property & casualty agent with a client that needs assistance, to a group of seniors turning 65 and they keep receiving Medicare information and are confused about what to do.
Janis enjoys the one on one contact with clients as well as looking forward to speaking to groups about healthcare. Her excitement for this industry is what drives her to stay in tune with Healthcare Reform and what is currently happening and what will happen with coverage from now to past 2014.
‘Educating individual and Medicare consumers to make informed choices’ is her mission because if people are educated and understand, they will make informed choices that they are comfortable with.
